Batman and Robin? Or Was It Siddhartha and Govinda?

As many of you might know, every great hero or person has a sidekick that appears in times of need and is always loyal no matter what consequences await for him. In this case, we can see it with Govinda. He is the person who most loves (not erotica) and admires the great Siddhartha. He is what people now call a true friend. And let me tell you; nowadays they are actually hard to find. Think of someone who doesn’t want you for personal gain other than your family. It is tough, isn’t it? Up to the point in which Govinda meets the illustrious one, there was not one time when he didn’t follow his friend. In other words, he was like a slave who loved Siddhartha. And the thing that made him a slave was being the shadow hiding inside the greatness of his friend.

Were can you find someone that will do whatever you want, not because of fear, but because of love? Govinda followed and protected him anywhere he went. When he left home Govinda followed him. When he left the Samanas and Govinda was happy, he still followed him. How can someone be so loyal to a friend?

After they met the Buddha, I thought that Govinda would still follow him but something unexpected happened. Govinda saw more knowledge in the Buddha than in his friend so he left him. I was quite shocked when this happened because I thought Govinda couldn't do anything by himself. I still think Govinda is a shadow. Maybe now he is a more present shadow, but with his personality he will never be a leader. He passed from being an only follower to one of many. I also think this is actually the first decision he makes alone. But we also have to acknowledge that Siddhartha also suffered with this lost. He is a leader so it didn't affect it as much, but it did affect him. "The Buddha has robbed me, thought Siddhartha." Siddhartha pg.29.

Foils are important, they help the main character be the person he wants to be. Govinda followed Siddhartha. This made Siddhartha feel empowered and better because he saw people loved and admired him. No one thinks the foil will be independent, so this story is full of surprises. When have you heard that the sidekick leaves the hero? It is not very common.

Apparently Robin is as important as Batman.

Seeing Knowledge In Others Makes You Knowledgeable

As time passes, Siddhartha became smarter and better. I am not saying that he wasn’t at first, but he has been improving. Through suffering and patience he has discovered how to achieve nirvana. He is not enlightened yet but the method has been discovered. This is a very important step because without the formula, the results cannot be completed.

At first he thought knowledge and learning were the ways to achieve inner peace. Later, he discovered self and how the cycle works. Gossips lead him to leave the Samanas and search for the enlightened one. When he got there he realized that what he desired could not be achieved by listening and learning from others. He needed to experience it.

He knew that the Buddha’s teaching was the best and that no others were better but he also knew that in all this there was a gap, a flaw if you want to think about it in this way. “O Brahmin’s son, and it is a credit to you that you have thought so deeply about them. You have found a flaw.” Siddhartha pg. 27. These are some wise words the illustrious one said.

There are many kinds of intelligences. Two of them are knowledge and salvation from suffering. Siddhartha wanted to achieve both of them. He already found the first one. With the Buddha he searched for the second one and learned that there were some things that could not be found just by reading books. You may think you know everything because you have read about everything, but do you truly know what things are like if you only have a description about them? The answer is no. True knowledge comes from experience. Experience is what truly matters in these kinds of situations. Forget about statistics and meet the real world.

Gossip Buddha

In the 21^st century, the world is ruled by gossip. No matter how good or bad it is, people can’t live without it. You see everyday, at every moment, someone gossiping about some one or something that may or may not be true. Apparently in Siddhartha the same thing happens. Do wise people gossip? Some may and some may not, but this is something that has been going on for centuries and it can determine the future of a person.

This happens when Siddhartha and Govinda start hearing rumors about an enlightened one that has achieved nirvana. He is a monk called Gotama that has been teaching and gaining followers from town to town. He is someone who has left self and doesn’t need to return to do the cycle again. "Once, when both youths had lived with the Samanas about three years and shared their practices, they heard from many sources a rumor, a report." Siddhartha pg.16. When Siddhartha heard about this man, he could not wait to hear his teachings so he and Govinda decided to leave the Samanas.

 I think that in this part, gossip is a really present topic because Siddhartha and Govinda keep hearing all sort of stuff about him. Some people say he is a truly blessed person, while others state that he is nothing but a fake that now lives in luxury. So this is gossip because it is passed from person to person and they can’t be sure if it is real until they hear his teachings. This is because from one mouth to another things might become distorted and changing reality. Is the illustrious one real? Are the two friends going to follow him? These are some questions that came to my mind as I analyzed the story.

Siddhartha A.K.A Tao of Confucius

This evening, as I was reading this new book about this amazing guy called Siddhartha, I saw how he applied several teachings of Lao Tzu and Confucius to his life. I saw this because he could not satiate his hunger for knowledge and he always wanted to continue learning to be able to achieve nirvana. What is nirvana? nirvana is  a term used a lot to describe when a person has really achieved enlightenment.

He first demonstrates some of Confucius teachings by acknowledging that the best way to become a better-enlightened man was through knowledge and always wanting to learn more. He could not stop learning. He had already learned everything the Brahmins could teach him. "He had begun to suspect that his worthy father and his other teachers, the wise Brahmins, had already passed on to him the bulk and best of their wisdom," Siddhartha pg.3

 When he had finally acquired all the knowledge from his father and all the other venerable Brahmins, he still thought he needed more to be able to leave self.  Therefore, he joined the Samanas to be able to learn how to leave self. Here, is where his life looks like if the Tao was dictating it. This is because he learns that it is a cycle in which there has to be balance and peace to be able to undertake it. With the Samanas, he finds out that there is actually no way to leave self completely but instead, that you always come back. "One must find the source within one's own self, one must possess it. Everything else was seeking a detour, error." Siddhartha pg.5

 He applies Tao in this last part by learning that by doing nothing, you are actually doing something. This last teaching could also be portrayed when he meditates and by only closing his eyes and clearing his mind, he was cleansing his spirit. So, this is how one great man can appear to be two others. These are qualities of a great man such as Siddhartha.

Spelling Wasp

Question #1:

Winning the spelling bee for Nupur is very I portent because she is from India and in India they take studying very seriously. She also likes participating in them and enjoys practicing for them like they showed in the documentary. All her family supports her and also in India you don't get second chances like you do in America so she thinks it is a great opportunity for her. Last but not least she had already compiled in one and lost so she wanted to win.

Question #4:

Yes, when I am in fighting tournaments. At first I start feeling really nervous because people there are huge and I'm not. My hands start sweating and I start feeling the need to go to the bathroom but when I start, I calm down and do my best even if I know it will be a really hard fight and I might get hurt.

Studying can lead to great things and more if its for what you like so keep on until you succeed.
